Distaghil Sar is the highest mountain in the Hispar Muztagh subrange of the Karakoram and the 19th highest peak in the world. It stands tall at 7,885 meters (25,869 feet) in the Shimshal Valley of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan.

Quick Facts

  • Height: 7,885 meters (25,869 feet)
  • Range: Hispar Muztagh, Karakoram
  • Location: Shimshal Valley, Gilgit-Baltistan
  • Coordinates: 36.18°N, 75.17°E

Etymology and Name

The name "Distaghil Sar" is believed to derive from the Wakhi or Burushaski words meaning "above the inner pasture". “Sar” translates to “peak.” The mountain has multiple summits, with the western peak being the highest.

Climbing History

The first ascent of Distaghil Sar was made in 1960 by a team from Austria and Switzerland, led by Günther Stärker and Diether Marchart. The ascent was made via the western face.

Attempts were previously made in the 1950s but were thwarted by storms and altitude sickness. Due to its steep slopes, complex glacial systems, and exposure to fierce weather, it remains one of the more difficult Karakoram peaks above 7,500 meters.

Physical Characteristics

Distaghil Sar has three prominent summits:

  • West Summit: 7,885 m (main summit)
  • Central Summit: ~7,760 m
  • East Summit: ~7,717 m

It features long snow ridges and complex crevassed glaciers, most notably the Khurdopin Glacier to the north and Virjerab Glacier to the south.

How to Reach

  1. Fly or drive to Gilgit
  2. Drive to Shimshal Valley via Passu

Climbing Routes

The standard route is via the western face and north ridge, involving:
