Overview
Drifika, also spelled Drefekah, is one of the most accessible and scenic peaks in the Hushe Valley region of the Karakoram. Located near the snout of the Charakusa Glacier, Drifika is often the first significant summit attempted by climbers heading into the region. Its unique triangular shape makes it easily recognizable from a distance.
The mountain is frequently used as a training peak or warm-up for those attempting more technically demanding summits like K6, K7, or Laila Peak. Its panoramic views and relatively moderate difficulty have made it a favorite among guided expeditions and alpine climbing schools.
Climbing History
Drifika has been climbed since the early 1980s by several international expeditions. Its accessibility and aesthetic appeal have drawn climbers from Japan, Europe, and Pakistan. While not as technically challenging as neighboring peaks, its weather conditions and glacial approach still require solid alpine skills.
Climbing Routes
The standard route begins at the Charakusa Base Camp and follows a glaciated ridge to a high camp at around 5,300 meters. From there, climbers ascend the northeast ridge which involves snow climbing with some technical sections near the summit ridge. Rope work, glacier navigation, and ice axe proficiency are required.
Typical Route Details:
- Base Camp: 4,000m
- High Camp: 5,300m
- Summit Day: 6–9 hours ascent, 4–6 hours descent
- Snow/ice gradient: 35°–50°
How to Reach Drifika
Start from Skardu and drive to Hushe village. The trek to Charakusa Base Camp takes 3–4 days, depending on pace and weather. Mules or porters carry gear and food. The trail offers beautiful views of the Masherbrum range and granite towers like Trango and Uli Biaho.
Best Time to Climb
Late June to early September is the ideal climbing window. July and August offer the most stable weather, though afternoon snowstorms are common. Acclimatization and weather planning are essential for summit success.
