K6 (Baltistan Peak) – Jewel of Hushe Valley

Elevation: 7,282 meters (23,891 feet)
Location: Hushe Valley, Karakoram Range, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan
Coordinates: 35.3936°N, 76.3761°E

Overview

K6, also known as Baltistan Peak, stands proudly in the Hushe Valley region of the Karakoram. With an elevation of 7,282 meters, it is one of the most dramatic and technically demanding peaks in Pakistan. It dominates the skyline above Hushe and is often seen as a gateway to the upper reaches of the Karakoram.

First Exploration and Ascent

The mountain was first explored during British expeditions in the 1930s. The first successful ascent of K6 was made in 1970 by an Austrian team led by Eduard Koblmueller via the southeast ridge. It remained largely unclimbed for decades due to its technical challenges and remote location.

Climbing K6

K6 is a formidable challenge for climbers due to its steep faces and frequent rockfalls. The southeast ridge and west face are the most commonly attempted routes. In 2013, American climbers Hayden Kennedy and Kyle Dempster made a notable ascent of the peak’s southwest face, contributing to its reputation as one of the harder 7000-meter climbs in the region.

Climbing Routes:

  • Southeast Ridge: The original route; requires alpine climbing skills.
  • West Face: Considered more difficult, with mixed terrain and risk of avalanches.
  • Southwest Face: Modern alpine-style attempts have been made; very technical.

How to Get There

The journey to K6 begins from Skardu, which is connected by air and road to Islamabad. From Skardu, travel by jeep to the village of Hushe, the last human settlement before the glacier base camps. The trek to K6 base camp begins from Hushe and follows the Charakusa Glacier, which is also the base for K7 and other nearby peaks.

When to Climb

The ideal climbing season for K6 is between late June and early September, when the weather is more stable. However, conditions are still unpredictable due to its elevation and exposure.

Permits and Regulations

K6 requires a mountaineering permit from the Gilgit-Baltistan Council and Ministry of Tourism. All foreign expeditions must be accompanied by a licensed Pakistani tour operator and a liaison officer.
