Latok IV – The Lesser-Known Jewel of the Latok Peaks

Height: 6,456 meters (21,181 feet)
Location: Panmah Muztagh, Karakoram Range, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan
Coordinates: 35.749°N, 75.887°E

Overview

Latok IV is a smaller but equally dramatic peak in the Latok group, located in the remote Panmah Muztagh subrange of the Karakoram. Though it lacks the towering fame of Latok I or The Ogre, it remains a serious challenge for alpine climbers seeking steep, mixed terrain in complete isolation.

Geographical Context

Latok IV is situated to the southwest of Latok III and to the southeast of Latok II. It overlooks the Choktoi Glacier and contributes to the iconic skyline of the Latok group. The entire region is characterized by dramatic granite spires, icy couloirs, and treacherous weather systems.

Climbing Status

Latok IV has seen very limited ascents, and many of its faces remain largely unexplored. Its technical difficulty, remoteness, and lack of established routes make it an ideal objective for climbers interested in pioneering new lines. No widely published ascent records exist, making it a potential prize for first ascenders on many of its ridges.

Access and Base Camp

Access to Latok IV follows the same route as other Latok peaks. The journey begins in Skardu, from where a jeep ride leads to Askole, followed by a 6–7 day trek to the Choktoi Glacier base camp. Porters and local guides familiar with the Panmah region are essential.

Best Time to Climb

The optimal climbing window is from mid-July to early September, when snow conditions are relatively stable, and storms are less frequent. Even then, climbers should expect unpredictable weather.

Permit Information

A special permit from the Gilgit-Baltistan Council is required to climb Latok IV. Climbers must be registered with a Pakistani tour operator and accompanied by a liaison officer. Environmental and search & rescue fees apply.

Nearby Peaks

  • Latok I – 7,145m
  • Latok II – 7,108m
  • Latok III – 6,949m
  • The Ogre (Baintha Brakk) – 7,285m

Summary

Latok IV may not be as well-known as its towering siblings, but it holds immense promise for elite climbers and adventurers. With sheer rock faces, unpredictable weather, and few recorded ascents, it remains one of the Karakoram’s last untouched frontiers.
