Paju Peak – A Majestic Sentinel Over the Baltoro Glacier

Height: 6,660 meters (21,850 feet)
Location: Baltoro Glacier region, Karakoram, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan
Coordinates: 35.75°N, 76.34°E

Introduction

Paju Peak, also spelled Paiyu Peak, rises dramatically over the Baltoro Glacier and serves as an iconic landmark for trekkers on their way to K2 Base Camp. While not as tall as the giants further up the glacier, Paju Peak’s sharp ridges and steep faces offer a stunning welcome to the heart of the Karakoram.

Geographical Significance

Paju Peak overlooks Paju Camp, the traditional first major campsite for trekkers and expeditions heading to Concordia, K2, Broad Peak, and Gasherbrum. Its visibility from the trail and position near the confluence of rivers and glaciers makes it a geographical and spiritual gateway into the inner Karakoram.

Climbing Information

Despite its popularity among trekkers, Paju Peak has not been frequently climbed due to its technical nature and overshadowing by higher neighbors. The peak features mixed terrain of snow, rock, and ice, with steep ridges that demand alpine skill. There is little documentation on official ascents, making it a possible target for climbers seeking first routes.

Access and Trek

Trekkers begin their journey from Skardu and drive to Askole, the last village before the Baltoro trek. A 2–3 day walk from Askole leads to Paju Camp, located near the snout of the Baltoro Glacier. The peak is visible to the north, towering over the camp and the surrounding valley.

Best Season

The best time to see or climb Paju Peak is from mid-June to early September. This is also the primary trekking season to Concordia, making the peak a constant companion to adventurers headed deeper into the range.

Cultural Notes

The name “Paju” or “Paiyu” comes from the Balti word meaning “salt,” referencing a rock formation nearby. Local porters and guides often consider the area sacred, and the peak is viewed with reverence by many who pass it.

Nearby Peaks and Landmarks

  • Uli Biaho
  • Trango Towers
  • Cathedral Towers
  • K2 (further up the glacier)

Conclusion

Though often passed by without pause, Paju Peak is a breathtaking mountain that marks the beginning of some of the world’s most epic high-altitude journeys. For photographers, trekkers, and serious climbers, it stands as an unforgettable symbol of the Karakoram’s majesty.
