Latok III – The Hidden Gem of the Latok Group
Height: 6,949 meters (22,799 feet)
Location: Panmah Muztagh, Karakoram Range, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan
Coordinates: 35.75°N, 75.90°E
Overview
Latok III is one of the striking peaks of the Latok group, rising just south of Latok II in the Panmah Muztagh subrange of the Karakoram. Despite its slightly lower altitude than Latok I and II, it is equally formidable in terms of climbing difficulty. Its steep granite faces, corniced ridges, and glaciated terrain make it a classic yet less-frequented challenge for technical mountaineers.
Climbing History
- The first ascent of Latok III was achieved in 1979 by a Japanese team led by Yoshihiro Inoue.
- The team tackled the mountain via the Southwest Ridge, which includes difficult mixed climbing over ice, snow, and rock.
- Since then, very few repeat ascents have been recorded due to its remote location and technical demands.
Geography and Features
Latok III lies within the same chain as Latok I and II, forming a dramatic skyline above the Choktoi and Baintha Glaciers. Its rugged and pointed summit offers climbers minimal margin for error, and weather windows are notoriously narrow in the area. The peak's rock faces and knife-edge ridges attract elite climbers looking for a true alpine test.
Popular Routes
- Southwest Ridge: First ascent route; features snow arêtes, ice faces, and steep granite.
- East Face (Unclimbed): Considered one of the most technical big walls in the Karakoram; yet to be successfully ascended.
Access and Base Camp
The mountain is accessed via the Choktoi Glacier. Treks to base camp typically begin from Askole after reaching Skardu by road or air. The approach trek takes 5–7 days depending on the season and glacier conditions.
Climbing Season
The best time to attempt Latok III is from mid-July to early September, when weather conditions are relatively favorable and glacier travel is less hazardous.
Permit Requirements
Climbing Latok III requires a special permit from the Gilgit-Baltistan Council. Climbers must register with a licensed Pakistani tour operator and hire a local liaison officer. Environmental protection and search and rescue fees are applicable.
