Ghent Kangri - Mountains of Pakistan

Ghent Kangri

Height: 7,401 meters (24,281 feet)

Location: Saltoro Range, Karakoram, Gilgit-Baltistan, near Siachen Glacier

Local Name: Ghaint Kangri (also known regionally)

Overview

Ghent Kangri is a majestic peak in the Saltoro Mountains of the Karakoram range, standing at 7,401 meters. It is situated near the Siachen Glacier, one of the most geopolitically sensitive and glaciated zones in the world. Due to its location, climbing access is highly restricted.

Exploration and History

The mountain was named after the Belgian city of Ghent. Ghent Kangri came to international attention during the early cartographic and military expeditions in the Karakoram. The first recorded ascent was made in 1961 by a Japanese expedition, but due to the militarized status of the region, documentation is sparse.

Climbing and Restrictions

Climbing Ghent Kangri is considered extremely challenging—not just for its technical demands but also for its military sensitivity. It lies close to the Actual Ground Position Line (AGPL) between Pakistan and India, making it almost inaccessible for civilian climbers.

Geopolitical Significance

Ghent Kangri is one of several peaks overlooking the Siachen Glacier. Control over these peaks is of strategic importance, which is why this area has seen military tension for decades. While climbers might admire its grandeur, the region remains under high military watch.

Fun Fact

Despite being rarely climbed, Ghent Kangri's image is used in military symbolism by Pakistan due to its high-altitude strategic location.
