Introduction

Uli Biaho Tower is one of the most striking granite spires in the world, rising above the eastern side of the Baltoro Glacier in the Karakoram. Its vertical 1,000+ meter rock wall makes it a dream objective for elite climbers. The tower is part of a cluster of spires in the region, including Trango Towers and Cathedrals.

Geographical and Visual Significance

Seen along the Baltoro trek near Paju and Urdukas, Uli Biaho commands attention with its sheer vertical face. It is often mistaken for part of the Trango Group but stands distinctly to the southeast. Its granite wall is one of the most photogenic and technically demanding walls in all of Asia.

Climbing History

The tower gained global attention when it was first successfully climbed in 1979 by an American team consisting of , Ron Kauk, Bill Forrest, and Jeff Lowe. They tackled the vertical southeast face in an alpine-style climb that is still revered today.

Later ascents include:

  • 2006: A successful Slovenian ascent via a new route on the southeast face.
  • 2013: Multiple international teams attempted the wall, including Russian and Korean climbers.
  • 2021: A German team made a modern free-climbing attempt on a variant route.

Climbing Characteristics

Uli Biaho features technical big wall rock climbing with granite cracks, overhangs, and exposed vertical pitches. It is not a peak for traditional mountaineering but requires high-level rock climbing ability, including aid and free climbing techniques. Fixed ropes are generally required, and weather windows are tight.

Access Route

Reaching the base of Uli Biaho involves trekking from Skardu to Askole, then walking 2–3 days on the Baltoro Glacier trail past Paju Camp and towards Urdukas. From there, the route diverts across glacial moraine to the base of the wall.

Best Time to Visit

The best climbing season is between late June and early August when the rock is dry and the glacier crossings are manageable. Temperatures are mild, though weather is unpredictable.
